2007 Rowing History!!

On Sunday 25 February the Annesley Rowing Club officially named their new boats at a ceremony on the banks of the River Torrens. About 130 rowers, parents and invited guests enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of pomp and ceremony – the weather was beautiful and the atmosphere electric.

Parent, Stephen Charlton and Deputy Principal Sue Richards, officially introduced benefactor, Maxwell Cooper, to the crowd and proceeded to name the boats. The eight was named the “Derek Lowe” and one quad was named the “Maxwell Cooper”. The second quad is to be named the “John Hunt” at a later stage.

Mr Cooper managed to finally smash the champagne bottle on the bow of the boat and the boats were officially named to the huge applause from the crowd gathered.

2007 Head of the River
The annual rowing regatta, Head of the River, was held at West Lakes on Saturday 31 March. For the first time Annesley was eligible to compete, and did so in fine style. It was the climax of a year of hard work and dedication for the rowing crews. Annesley College congratulates all the girls, the Parents Support Group and the outstanding coaching staff, headed by Derek and Tina Lowe.

The first VIII crew rowed a sensational race, blitzing the field and winning the B Grade final by 5 boat lengths. It was a very emotional win for the girls, especially the 3 Year 12s, who have rowed their last race for Annesley. The girls rowed their hearts out and made everyone proud. The Year 10A crew had a photo finish for 3rd place, rowed a great race and showed spirit and promise of things to come. The 9A crew finished 5th and the 9B crew did very well to finish 2nd. It was a great day for Annesley Rowing. It was wonderful to see so many Annesley students, parents and staff on the day supporting the girls.

The dinner on Saturday night was a great success and an appropriate finish to the 06/07 season. The new fourth boat was officially named the ‘John Hunt’ and was blessed by Annesley's Chaplain, Rev Jenny Walker. Many presentations were made, including the newly acquired Ausrowtec Rowing Award, donated by the manufacturer of Annesley’s new boats. Ausrowtec’s Managing Director presented the award to student Kara Charlton for her dedication to rowing and school life this season.

Rowing has a very bright future at Annesley College.
