EOS DAILY UPDATE

Final Update
Arriving home encompassed so many mixed emotions for the whole team. There was relief to have made the journey safely and successfully. There was happiness to see family and friends and looking forward to your own bed and bathroom. And then there was that feeling that you want to do it all over again; just turn around and head back to Darwin because the experience was so fantastic.

The experience involves the successful, daily running of the car; the involvement with the organisers and the challenge; the friendship and appreciation of the other teams in your event and of the huge challenges of the solar car teams and the magnificent feeelig of beig a team competing in one of the world's great challenges and that great feeling of working successfully as a team.

So coming in to Adelaide you remember all of the people who have helped make the experience happen. This includes Annesley College and the previous principals and staff members and students who have given us the platform to continue their great work. You think of all of the great sponsors of previous races who have had faith in the project. And you think of the sponsors of this project. These were the most diificuly economic times that we have experienced in the project and many of our previous sponsors had to decline this event. So it was great that some new people could come and support us along with the continued brilliant support from Holden.

During the race there were several meetings and many discusssions about the future of the event and the future of Annesley's participation. We were overwhelmed by the support and encouragement we received from other teams. We knew we had to continue competing in this event in the future and encourage other schools.

We were blown away when Andrea, Simon and Scott the team from Holden offered their continuing support with such enormous enthusiasm. On the meeting in Port Augusta we planned and exciting new project with the new Holden Cruze Diesel as the basic platform and some brilliant ideas to work together to present an impressive entry for the 2011 Golbal Green Challenge.

With such support at this very early stage we will be able to organise the project and all of the detail right from the beginning of 2010. This could shape up as the best ever EOS Project. We have been asked to help promote increased school involvement by the organisers and that will be an honour to work at visiting other schools and helping set up possible programs for them.

With this exciting future you have to think too of the past; the weekend before the car left when Peter Pudney, Greg Galatis (and friend), Bruce Craven and I put in a massive effort to get the car going after the motor shorted out; the effort of the girls and the staff who caught the Ghan on that Sunday afternoon not having a clue was before them and then forming a formidable team that impressed the organisers and the other professional teams alike.

Thank you to the Home Team who kept everyone informed, including us,about what was happening in the race and at school.

With such resources, the future is bright.

We have ad Assembly and lunch for sponsors and supporters on November 18 I believe. Hope to see you there and see you soon for the beginning of the 2011 project.

29 October

Today was great. a 540 km run from Coober Pedy to Port Augusta. The weather was superb and the car and the girls are still well. The highlights were the Dutch and Michigan teams racing closely around us near Glendambo. Both magnificent vehicles and professional teams. It was incredible exciting even for us caught in the middle.

Again we will not know our fuel figures for yesterday until latter today Yesterday's figures were disappointing after the effort the girls put in. We only managed 6.8 litres/100 km which was not as good as the previous day. We did not understand why today was not as good as the previous days.

The organisers shouted us all dinner last night which was a pleasant surprise.
The Team is looking forward to being in Adelaide.

28 October
Day 4 was 686 km and 9 ½ hours ...... a long day but fantastic. Tuesday night was a beautiful reception at the Crowne Plaza where the CEO of the motorsport highlighted the EOS Project for special mention.

Internode offered their charging facilities to us which was fantastic and we had great conversations with Holden about the future while mixing with the interesting and experienced people in the Eco Challenge.

It was Courtney Brannigan's 17th birthday and her mum had organised a cake with the hotel which was bought out and everyone in the Eco Challenge sang her ‘Happy Birthday’.

We were passed by Michigan University's solar car today. It is so exciting for the girls to see these magnificent pieces of technology in middle of the Outback. The countryside has been awesome for us all.

Maddie Kavanagh gave a great live interview on 5AA Tuesday morning!

The girls drove with the windows up and the air conditioning off yesterday. They did well and pushed themselves in the heat. We are hoping for great fuel consumption figures.
Off to Port Augusta today.....getting close!

27 October
Another great day. Yesterday the race distance was only 513 km and we managed to finish by 3.30 pm. The organisers made special arrangements for us to charge the car, which was great. We managed a record 6 l/100 km by running without air conditioning and at the minimum speed and made the set time by the skin of our teeth. It was quite exciting. The girls perspired heaps without the air conditioning but we think we will give it a go again today.

It was very dusty so the girls cleaned all of the cars before cooling off in the pool. The team then went to the Crowne Plaza for a cocktail hour to talk with some of the other competitors. Everyone in our race is keeping their figures fairly private, so it will be interesting to see the final results.

The first solar car arrived in Alice Springs yesterday. It is from Tokyo so neither Aurora nor the Dutch are leading. That too looks a good race.

Today is the longest day of the race - 685 km to Coober Pedy. We are looking forward to it but it will be a big challenge. The girls are fantastic and driving very well and behaving as you would expect - stunning!

26 October
And the race begins........
The team has had a really busy two days. After Friday afternoon of team meetings, paper checks and rules explanations followed by the official reception in Parliament House the team went to bed reasonable early to rise on Saturday early to get to scrutineering at the Hidden Valley Raceway by 8.00 am. EOS was scrutineered first which involved the car being weighed and safety checked along with rules compliance. However by going first meant the team had to wait for all other vehicles to be scrutineered before they could go to the required fuel depot to all be filled with fuel and have our tanks sealed.

After EOS then assemble in State Square to have an excellent send off for our first urban section of the race around Darwin which Della and Courtney had surveyed the night before and did with ease. The team then set out to do the second section to Katherine where we arrived at 6.00 pm and waited to get our refuelling organised.

The team went to our caravan Park and quickly booked in and then walked to the Katherine Museum where Mr Mark (father of Clare Mark in Year 8) put on a great meal for us. The team were entertained by his great stories and food that included damper, camel sausages, roast lamb and vegetables and scones and jams along with delicious billy tea with gum leaf.

The next morning the team rose at 6.00 am showered, made breakfast packed the cars and got to Park Ferme where the cars are kept overnight ready for an 8.00 am start.

Sunday was a lovely run of 668 km from Katherine to Tennant Creek. The car ran beautifully and the girls were great. Some of the cars had troubles (the beautiful Honda electric car!) and some are great like the 50cc honda postie bike that Top Gear Australia are running. We are working well with Holden and their great team.

Today run is to Alice Springs. Also the Solar cars began today so the leaders might be catching us sometime tomorrow which will be exciting. We hear that Aurora from Australia with Peter Pudney as their tactician won pole position on Saturday with top speed of 153 kph!!!

The team is working hard and doing well. Annesley is a respected nae in these circles and it is an honour to be here representing the name with this magnificent group of students and staff.

EOS 2009 – A New Challenge

Annesley College will be competing in the Innovation Class in the World Solar Challenge in October 2009.

We will be competing with our Holden Viva IC\Electric hybrid vehicle which we have built for the challenge. Our aim will be to cross the Australian continent from Darwin to Adelaide using the least amount of fossil fuel.

Students from Year 11 will be driving the car and students from Year 8 to 11 will be the co-drivers.

This project aims to be self funding and the first challenge is to secure sponsorship which will be a challenge in the current climate.

This is an amazing experience for all students that join the team - meeting competitors from around the world and tackling the journey across Australia.

Anyone interested in joining the EOS Project for 2009 please contact Peter Gubbins at Annesley College. For a copy of our Fact Sheet please click here.
