Located just beyond the South Parklands in our beautiful city of Adelaide, Annesley enjoys extensive outdoor space to support our learners to be active, to play and connect with nature.

Our onsite resources far exceed usual expectations of a primary school, particulalry our historic Gillingham Hall as a meeting and performing arts space and our vast indoor gymnasium for PE and Sport activities. Our enviable city-fringe location is taken advantage of as our students navigate public and private transport to unearth the treasures of Adelaide and its surrounds as a key resource in their learning.

We are delighted to share that Annesley Junior School will soon begin an exciting new chapter with the re-development of our Early Learning Centre (ELC). This significant investment will create beautiful, purpose-built learning environments that will enrich the experience of our youngest learners for many years to come.

The project has been thoughtfully designed to support every stage of early childhood development and reflects our ongoing commitment to providing exceptional learning spaces for current and future Annesley families.

What’s Included?

The re-development will transform our existing ELC through:

• A re-design of our current indoor spaces to create additional ELC rooms,
  providing tailored 12-month age groupings (2, 3, & 4-year-old rooms)
• Dedicated three-year-old ELC rooms to enhance our delivery of
  Flying Start 3-year old preschool
• Renovated indoor learning spaces with improved access to bathrooms
• Extended and landscaped outdoor play spaces designed specifically
  for each age group
• A new, central community space for our ELC which will include a kitchen,
  library, and a multi-purpose space, connecting all ELC rooms

Construction is scheduled to commence late August and will be completed in carefully planned stages, with the project expected to be finished in early 2027. We are proud to be partnering with Swanbury Penglase and Gilmore Construction to bring this exciting vision to life.

Supporting Our Children Throughout the Project

While this is an exciting milestone for our school, our priority throughout the re-development is ensuring that our children’s learning, wellbeing and daily routines continue with as little interruption as possible.

Our Early Learning Centre will remain fully operational during construction, with the project carefully staged to minimise disruption to classrooms and learning programs. Any temporary relocation of ELC rooms will be kept to an absolute minimum, allowing children to continue learning in familiar, nurturing environments wherever possible.

The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and families will remain at the forefront of every decision throughout the construction process.

Keeping Our Community Informed

We understand that families will want to stay informed as the project progresses. Regular updates will be shared throughout the re-development so that families know what to expect at each stage.

Current ELC families will receive information specific to their child’s room arrangements during construction, and 2027 room placements will also be communicated in the coming weeks. We will also provide opportunities for families to view the redevelopment plans and learn more about the exciting new spaces as the project takes shape.

Important restoration works commenced on Gillingham Hall and the Patchell Building as part of Stage 1 of a larger program designed to protect and enhance Annesley’s historic buildings.

Commencing in mid-to-late June 2025, Stage 1 included essential internal and external upgrades to Gillingham Hall to strengthen its structural integrity and preserve its legacy for future generations. The works also provided an opportunity to undertake further investigations to identify any additional structural requirements that could not have been identified prior to commencement. Minor external repairs were also completed on the Patchell Building as part of Stage 1, with all Stage 1 construction activity completed in September 2025.

To ensure the safety of our students, staff, and visitors, Gillingham Hall remained closed while the works were underway. The Hall successfully reopened in August 2025 following the completion of the internal works. Every effort was made to minimise disruption during this time, and we sincerely thank our community for their patience and understanding while this important work was undertaken.

We would also like to extend our thanks to the Annesley College Foundation, which generously funded the Stage 1 works.

The Foundation was established in the 1980s to support fundraising and building works at Annesley College and was reactivated to help invest in the future of Annesley Junior School. The Foundation continues to support projects that enhance our learning environment and preserve the unique character of our campus. We are grateful for the Foundation’s support on this important initiative and look forward to continuing our partnership on future projects that benefit our school community.

Stage 2 of the restoration and safety program, which includes further works to the historic Patchell Building, is scheduled to commence later this year. We look forward to providing further updates as this next stage progresses.

We’re thrilled to have completed Annesley Junior School’s Masterplan, a major milestone in our school’s history. As experts in primary education teaching students aged 2 to 12, we’ve transformed our campus to create purpose-built spaces that foster creativity, curiosity, growth and academic excellence.

The ground floor of the Harris Building now features a new Arts and Library precinct, including a new Art Studio, expanded library, and outdoor reading garden. In the Courtyard Precinct, we’ve designed a collaborative Year 5 learning space, relocated and expanded the Science Lab, and added a state-of-the-art Digital Technologies learning space to support innovation in this field.

A highlight of our Masterplan is the renovation of our historic Patchell Building. Originally built in 1881, it now serves as a contemporary Year 6 learning space and administration hub.

These upgrades honour our heritage while positioning Annesley for the future, providing our students with innovative, engaging environments to nurture their primary education journey.
