Old scholars of Annesley
We have been blessed with an Old Scholars’ Committee this year who are working with great energy and enthusiasm to not only honour our rich 122-year history, but also to build strong connections in our current student community.
The Old Scholars’ Committee are currently proposing a constitutional name change with the clear purpose of embracing recent and future graduates of Annesley Junior School. This change would see the Association’s name become MLC/Annesley Old Scholars’ Association instead of MLC/Annesley College Old Scholars’ Association, allowing our current students to belong to an Annesley Old Scholar’s Association after they graduate primary school.
The Annesley Parents’ Association have generously funded a student-driven project to create a new honour board in Gillingham Hall to record our Annesley Junior School Leaders from recent years and into our future. This new honour board will be unveiled at the Old Scholars’ Association Drinks @ Gillingham Event on Friday 1 November. We’d love any Old Scholars in our community to join us at this event. I am excited that a number of our Annesley Junior School Leaders from 2018-2024 will be joining us at this event to share in this special moment.
There are wonderful things happening with our Old Scholars’ Association and it is particularly exciting that our current students will benefit from this Association now and into their future.

Class placements 2025
A post on School Stream was shared on Monday explaining our class placement process for the new school year. We are asking families to share any information regarding their child/rens’ learning development, friendships or family concerns formally for consideration as we place children in classes for 2025. This can be done on a survey on the School Stream post by Monday 4 November. Now is the time to share this information, as we are unable to make changes to class placements after they have been communicated to families in Week 7.

Base 5 News: Exploring migration and celebrating Grandparents and Special Friends Day
This and last term, Base 5 students delved into their personal histories, journeys, and the push and pull factors of migration. Through this exploration, they examined the connections of migration from both local and global perspectives.
Our Central Idea:
Human migration is a response to challenges, risks, and opportunities.
Our Lines of Inquiry:
- The reasons why people migrate
- Migration throughout history
- The effects of migration on communities, cultures, and individuals
Through discussions and research, Base 5 gained valuable insights into the diverse experiences of migrants and how these journeys shape our world today.
To create a memorable experience for Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day, Base 5 recorded a podcast episode with their guests, focusing on their families’ migration histories. Everyone had a wonderful time sharing their stories! To make the day even more special, each grandparent or special friend brought a dish significant to their family’s culture, which they enjoyed together during the podcasting session called Snack and Chat.
We are thrilled to share some edited Snack and Chat podcasts that capture these heartfelt stories. Enjoy listening!

Maths Olympiad
This year Annesley entered a team of Year 4-6 students into the Maths Olympiad. The Maths Olympiad is specifically designed to stimulate and challenge high-achieving students in the area of Mathematics at primary school level. It teaches problem solving strategies and strengthens students’ mathematical intuition.
Our Annesley team was made up of students from Base 4, 5 and 6. Students spent some time in Term 1 becoming familiar with the type of problems in the Olympiad and having a chance to share strategies and compare approaches. The first round of the competition was in May and then there were three more, with the last round being in Week 8 of this term. The questions in the Olympiad are designed to be challengingand to require the competitors to work through a problem-solving process, rather than calculate theproblems mentally in their head.
An example:
Oliver has a rectangular garden with an area of 28 square metres.
Its length and width are a whole number of metres.
The length of the garden is 3 metres longer than its width. Oliver places 50cm x 50cm tiles together to make a continuous path
surrounding the garden, along its edges.
How many tiles does Oliver need?
Congratulations to:
Year 6: Henry, Emerson, Louis, Hari and Harry
Year 5: Spencer, Elise, Bronte, Jack, Indigo, Tomas, Lucy, Lachie
Year 4: Eva, George, Paige, Cash
You should feel proud being selected as part of the team and for showing up to each competition with a positive mindset even though you knew the questions were going to be challenging, you were going to make mistakes, be stumped and maybe not be able to find many, or any, of the solutions.
The top three performers overall at Annesley came down to the final round of the competition. Elise finished with a very strong 4 out of 5 to claim the overall top spot with 12 questions correct in total. Bronte finished second on 11 questions correct and Louis and Lucy finished equal third on 9 questions correct.
Once again, I’m very proud of the growth-mindset that was shown throughout the competition and the clever and creative problem-solving I was able to witness by all competitors.

Oliphant Science Awards
Congratulations to Audrey from Year 2. She was awarded 3rd prize for her entry in the Programming, Apps and Robotics category of the Oliphant Science Awards last Friday night.
She made a game using the program of Scratch that tests how well people of different ages can stop a bouncy ball on a target.
A successful Programming entry must do more than just follow a fixed sequence of steps. Audrey’s entry was innovative and showed how the program could be applied in her practical game.
Audrey has been a prize winner at the Oliphant Awards every year since beginning school.
Congratulations also to Isla from Year 2. She was awarded Highly Commended for her poster of Jane Goodall.
We are very proud of both young students. They are super scientists!
Audrey and Isla’s entries can be viewed in the online project gallery on the Oliphant Science Awards website which highlights all prize winning and highly commended entries.
Year 2 Performance
This week our Year 2 students shone on our Gilingham Hall stage in two performances, one for our student community and then again last night for families.
They performed ‘The Litter Muncher’ as a dramatic representation of their learning in their Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry ‘Human consumption impacts our environment’.
Hats off to our teachers!
Today we celebrated World Teachers’ Day.
At Annesley we recognise the incredible dedication, passion, and hard work of our teachers who inspire and empower our learners every day.
Students joined in the fun by wearing funny hats and writing heartfelt notes of appreciation for their teachers. It was a wonderful way to show how much they are valued.
Staff and teachers also enjoyed a lovely morning tea together, creating a wonderful atmosphere of gratitude.
A huge thank you to all our teachers for everything you do, we value you and your work.
October Vacation Care: Where Fun Meets Learning
October Vacation Care was a great success, full of adventures, smiles and learning opportunities. Students were able to experience a wide range of experiences including excursions to The Adelaide Zoo and Inflatable world. Children developed their autonomy, inter-dependence, resilience, and sense of agency when participating in ‘No Limits Sports’ Multi-sport workshop. Showing team spirit and becoming aware of fairness were strengths of the students throughout this workshop, achieving outcomes 1.2 and 2.3. During ‘Engineering Day – Kite Building’ OSHC students developed a growth mindset and learning dispositions such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination, and reflexivity. More highlights from October vacation Care period were a visit from Sci-Worlds portable planetarium and Misfit’s Dance Workshop.
Looking forward to many more new experiences to come during the upcoming December/January Vacation Care. Bookings will open Monday Week 5.

U-Turns on Rose Terrace
We ask our families to refrain from undertaking U-turns on Rose Terrace when bringing your child to school or collecting them at the end of the day. It is unlawful to do a U-turn over the yellow barriers on the road and a safety concern during peak times for our community along Rose Terrace during these busy times.

Kiss ‘n’ Drop
Through recent engagement with the Unley Council, they have confirmed guidelines for our community to follow when using the Kiss ‘n’ Drop zone. Drivers must remain within 3 metres of their car in this zone and can only remain stopped for 2 minutes. If a driver moves further than 3 metres away, the 2-minute period no longer applies. We have had regular inspections from Unley Council of this zone recently. We ask our community members to adhere to these guidelines to avoid getting fined, and to keep our Kiss ‘n’ Drop zone functioning effectively.
Supervision before and after school
A reminder to Primary families that supervision for our students is provided from 8.30am on school grounds. Prior to this time, students are not to be left onsite without an adult family member. Our Before School OSHC Service is available to families requiring early supervision from 7.30am to 8.30am. Similarly, staff supervision is provided after school until 3.45pm. OSHC is available to families needing care after school until 6pm.
