Three Words – What Went Well (WWW)

Today, I’m sharing with you three words that could reframe the age-old:

Parent:        ‘How was your day?”
Child:          ‘Good.’
Parent:       ‘What did you do?
Child:          ‘Not much.’

Annesley students are busy, active and engaged learners with full days of learning and adventures and ‘not much’ is not a true reflection of their days! Children however are very good at living in the present moment, so at 3.30pm, these moments of high engagement and learning are in the past.

So, I offer you three words to try at the end of the day – ‘What Went Well?’

Thank you to Sharyn (Director of Primary) who has shared over the last three Annesley Newsletters about many of our school’s wellbeing practices and our Student Wellbeing, Engagement and Behaviour Policy (available on School Stream). This policy outlines whole school approaches to promote positive behaviour, mental wellbeing and inclusion for all students.

Welcome Circles are conducted daily in classrooms and involve reviewing key values and determine daily expectations focus that align with essential agreements. A Welcome Circle includes:

  • Greeting
  • Values
  • Expectations
  • Announcements
  • Positive Primer
  • What Went Well

A What Went Well reflection ends each Welcome Circle every day in learning spaces and other times to conclude lessons or finish the day. What Went Well is a technique that has emerged from wellbeing sciences, and is a simple and effective way to build positive reflection and savour a child’s achievements.

Keep the moment that you first see your child at the end of the day for a loving greeting and embrace, then choose a moment (in the car, at the dinner table, before bed) to use these three words to hear from them a positive moment in their day that tells of a positive interaction, engagement in an activitiy or a learning moment that was significant for them.

It is a simple, yet powerful way to boost the mental wellbeing for your child/ren and you! It focuses the mind on positive emotions, reduces stress, builds resilience and enhances wellbeing.

I’d love you to give it a try at home and share your experiences with me.

Sounds-Write Accredited School – Silver Award

Annesley is leading the way in South Australia with the implementation of Sounds-Write, an evidence-based phonics program. Spotlight on Cameron Parsons

Meet Cameron!

We’re thrilled to welcome Cameron Parsons to Annesley as our new Digital Technologies teacher.

With a background in Aerospace Engineering and experience as a project planner, Cameron brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for problem-solving to the classroom. Having spent the last eight years as a teacher, he’s excited to inspire students with the wonders of technology, just as he has in his own life.

Outside the classroom, Cameron enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, and their two dogs, diving into a good book, playing video games, exploring national parks, following AFL, and even having a go at social mixed netball.

Be sure to say hello when you see him around – we’re delighted to have him at Annesley.

An Australian Archery Champion in our midst!

We are proud of your achievements Logan!

Swimming Week!

What's hatching in the Grevillea room?

ELC – Grevillea News

For the last fortnight the Grevillea room has housed chickens from Henny Penny Hatching! We received 2 chicks and an incubator full of eggs. Over the 2 weeks we watched the chicks grow and the eggs “pip”. We observed wet baby chickens hatching from the eggs who soon become fluffy and confident enough to enter the pen. We’re exploring How the World Works through change. Our line of inquiry is “changes in nature” the perfect start off point for exploring lifecycles!

We investigated questions such as:

“Why does the chicken stay in the egg?” – Alice
“Are they trying to fly?” – Ellie
“Chickens don’t fly…well, I’ve never seen one anyway” – Leo
“Why did it hatch out of the egg?” – Theo
“How do they hatch?” – Artie
“Where do they come from?” – Alby
“Why did a black chicken hatch from a white egg?” – Zoe

Unleashing Creativity in Visual Art

This week in Art class with Sarah Walsh, students have been immersed in the creative process of crafting beautiful decoupage terracotta pots. This engaging co-curricular activity has given everyone the opportunity to unleash their creativity by designing and decorating unique, one-of-a-kind pots. From crafting vibrant patterns to cutting and gluing, each student has created a personal masterpiece. It’s been an enjoyable and hands-on experience.

Year 3 Fringe Excursion

As part of our Performing Arts Program at Annesley, students are given the opportunity to view live performance. Our Year 3 students went to the Fringe on Thursday to deepen their understanding of their transdisciplinary inquiry into ‘People can express their unique voice through the arts’.

The students attended a performance called Mission to the Moon at Gluttony to allow students the opportunity to view a live performing arts production and it was an excellent provocation for upcoming learning. In Term 2 students will be devising their own productions and performing them in front of an informal audience as part of their learning in base rooms and Performing Arts. Next week they will be developing their skills in responding to performance and explaining how the elements of drama are used. One lucky and courageous student even took the opportunity to be a part of the show!

The meaning of Harmony Day

Across the school we reflected on the meaning of Harmony Day and the importance of inclusion and belonging for people of all cultures.

Chloe, Jamie, Dylan and Adelaide and Edie from Base 2 Katie/Millie sharing their Harmony Day logos and designs.

Belonging and Harmony Day

This morning, as part of Harmony Day, some of the Base 4 and 5 classes came together to celebrate diversity and equality across the school. The students collaborated to create vibrant mosaic tiles, each one representing the theme of Belonging at Annesley. With lovely drawings, and thoughtful designs, the tiles symbolised the uniqueness and unity of the school community.

Writing: Hot off the Press!

In Base 4, the children have been busy drafting, editing, and publishing their very own newspaper reports about their experiences during Swimming Week. Throughout the process, they’ve learned the importance of incorporating specific features to engage the reader, such as attention-grabbing headlines, clear structure, and descriptive language.

Their dedication to improving their writing skills has been impressive, and they’ve shown great perseverance in refining their reports. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and the creativity they’ve demonstrated in producing such fantastic pieces. It’s been a wonderful opportunity for them to develop both their writing abilities and their confidence in sharing their experiences with others.

Grandparents and Special Friend Days

U-Turns on Rose Terrace

We ask our families to refrain from undertaking U-turns on Rose Terrace when bringing your child to school or collecting them at the end of the day. It is unlawful to do a U-turn over the yellow barriers on the road and a safety concern during peak times for our community along Rose Terrace during these busy times.

Applications for siblings

A reminder to all families that if you have younger children that you have not yet submitted an application form for, that it can be done via this link: https://enrol.annesley.sa.edu.au/application-for-admission/start

An application must be submitted in order for a child to be considered for a place.

If you are not sure if you have submitted an application and wish to check, or for any other questions, please contact Laura in the Student Enrolments Office on 8422 2211 or email enrolments@annesley.sa.edu.au

Kiss & Drop

Through recent engagement with the Unley Council, they have confirmed guidelines for our community to follow when using the Kiss & Drop zone. Drivers must remain within 3 metres of their car in this zone and can only remain stopped for 2 minutes. If a driver moves further than 3 metres away, the 2-minute period no longer applies. We have had regular inspections from Unley Council of this zone recently. We ask our community members to adhere to these guidelines to avoid getting fined, and to keep our Kiss & Drop zone functioning effectively.

Supervision before and after school

A reminder to Primary families that supervision for our students is provided from 8.30am on school grounds. Prior to this time, students are not to be left onsite without an adult family member. Our Before School OSHC Service is available to families requiring early supervision from 7.30am to 8.30am. Similarly, staff supervision is provided after school until 3.45pm. OSHC is available to families needing care after school until 6pm.

Calling for Unify donations
