Principal's News

To continue with the Wellbeing theme in our Annesley Newsletter this term, I acknowledge the confronting content that has been brought into the consciousness of parents worldwide through the release of Netflix’s latest drama: Adolescence. Whilst a fictious series, it raises awareness for a generation of parents who grew up without social media, of the complexities awaiting our children through access to technology and highlights the potentially disastrous consequences that can occur.

As an ELC and Primary setting, some of these influences are kept at bay at Annesley, while our students enjoy a rich childhood here in preparation for their transition to high school. We proudly promote and protect a child-like environment for our students in this most crucial stage of their development, noting that the best preparation for adulthood is a wonder-filled childhood.

With that said, as educators and parents, it is prudent to spend our time now becoming aware of and preparing for the influences that lie ahead for our children, no more so that the pressure of peer influence through social media and their hyper-connectivity through technology.

An exciting new initiative this term at Annesley is the formation of a Wellbeing Committee, led by our Director of Primary Sharyn Darrell and joined by Penny Rawinski (Coordinator of Experiential Learning and Wellbeing), Isabella (Year 6 student and Wellbeing Leader), Michael Murphy (Parent and Council Member) and Emily Harrison (Parent). As a team, they are planning to some key initiatives to support the wellbeing of all members of our Annesley Community.

Top of their list currently is a ‘Dare to Become – Parenting Series’ that will provide the opportunity for Annesley parents (ELC & Primary) to engage in workshops covering issues of technology and social media, hearing from an expert in the Parenting & Wellbeing space and more. I’m just sharing this as a teaser for now,  more information is to come soon!

Base 4 Camp

The Base 4 camp at Adare campsite Victor Harbor did not disappoint providing the students with  an unforgettable experience. Highly qualified Beyond limits instructors led us in a variety of team-building exercises as well as some individual challenges  including mountain biking and kayaking. These activities fostered collaboration and encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones. The beautiful surroundings added to the adventure, while the students demonstrated impressive resilience and a growth mindset,   approaching each task with determination, supporting one another and pushing through obstacles. Their positive attitude and respectful behavior created a supportive atmosphere, making the camp a memorable and enriching experience for everyone involved.

This week our Year 6 Student Leaders attended Halogen Leadership Day at the Convention Centre with our two Year 6 teachers, Christian and Emily, and two parent volunteers. They spent the day learning from leaders in our community, including the Governor of South Australia, Author Thomas Duncan-Watt, Power Player Tom Jonas and Jess Stenson. It was a highlight when Jess Stenson showed a photo of Annesley on the big screen as she shared her journey. Jess is a proud Old Scholar of Annesley!

News from Base 5

News from the Wattle Room

In the Wattle Room, we have been investigating and inquiring about the life-cycle of a butterfly. Children have been given the opportunity to observe and notice caterpillars and draw and note their observations. This learning opportunity is in line with our current IB inquiry, How the World Works – Change is all around us.

This thought-provoking inquiry has led the children to ask a variety of questions including, “How long does the caterpillar stay inside the chrysalis?”, “What does it come out looking like?”.

2025 Annesley Sports Day!

A Celebration of Teamwork and Community Spirit

Last Friday, Annesley Junior School came alive with effort, fair play, respect, and determination as students, staff, and families gathered for our much-anticipated 2025 Sports Day. It was a fantastic day of friendly competition, teamwork, and community spirit, and we are incredibly proud of our Annesley Primary athletes for giving their very best. Throughout the day, they embodied the Annesley values, while our community members and families created a strong sense of belonging.

Congratulations to Corinth, this year’s winning House! Their students displayed courage, resilience, and humility, setting a wonderful example for all. However, the true spirit of the day was in the enthusiasm and sportsmanship shown by all Houses, who competed with great energy and determination.

A huge thank you to Zac Venning and Penny Rawinski for their dedication in coordinating such a successful event, as well as to our Property Team for ensuring the grounds were perfectly prepared. We also appreciate the support and teamwork of our incredible Annesley staff, who made sure the day ran smoothly and that our students had a fantastic experience.

We are especially grateful to the Annesley Parents Association (APA) for their invaluable help behind the scenes, particularly in providing lunch for everyone. It was also wonderful to welcome members of the Old Scholars Association, who joined us on the day to reconnect and celebrate Annesley’s rich history.

Finally, a big thank you to all the families and friends who came along to cheer on the students – your encouragement and enthusiasm made the event even more special.

Most importantly, congratulations to all the Houses for their outstanding efforts, team spirit, and perseverance, especially on such a warm day.

Well done, everyone!

Kiss & Drop

Through recent engagement with the Unley Council, they have confirmed guidelines for our community to follow when using the Kiss & Drop zone. Drivers must remain within 3 metres of their car in this zone and can only remain stopped for 2 minutes. If a driver moves further than 3 metres away, the 2-minute period no longer applies. We have had regular inspections from Unley Council of this zone recently. We ask our community members to adhere to these guidelines to avoid getting fined, and to keep our Kiss & Drop zone functioning effectively.

Supervision before and after school

A reminder to Primary families that supervision for our students is provided from 8.30am on school grounds. Prior to this time, students are not to be left onsite without an adult family member. Our Before School OSHC Service is available to families requiring early supervision from 7.30am to 8.30am. Similarly, staff supervision is provided after school until 3.45pm. OSHC is available to families needing care after school until 6pm.
