Annesley News Issue 242
Principal’s News
Annesley Junior School is proud to be an independent school. The Association of Independent School of South Australia (AISSA) leads, supports, represents and advocates for the independent sector in South Australia.
Released this week, the 2025 Independent School National Snapshot confirms that independent schools are increasing in demand, but it also interestingly reveals the increasing diversity of students now being educated in the independent sector.
The Association of Independent Schools of South Australia (AISSA), through its national body Independent Schools Australia (ISA), shared its 2025 Snapshot, confirming a record 744,993 students in Australia are enrolled across 1,230 Independent schools nationwide. This includes:
- 145,937 students in regional and remote areas
- Over 20,900 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- More than 175,000 students with disability
- More than one-third of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
- 60% from low- to middle-income families
- Independent schools now educate 1 in 5 Australian students—yet they receive nearly $12,000 less in government funding per student compared to public schools.
You can find the full snapshot here.
AISSA advocates strongly for the school choice that is offered by the independent sector and also advocates strongly against the mis-representation of independent schools that is often seen in the media, especially when it comes to funding.
Independent schools contribute significantly to the Australian education landscape, by providing unique learning environments and foster community engagement with a focus on choice, innovation, and excellence. They often feature smaller class sizes, specialised support staff and allowing for more individualised attention and tailored learning experiences.
School choice matters.

From Seesaw to Anney!
Introducing Our New Learning Platform – Anney!
We’re thrilled to announce that starting Monday, 21st July, Annesley Junior School will be launching a brand-new, customisable Learning Management System (LMS) called Anney. This platform is designed to enhance the way learning experiences are shared between students, teachers, and parents, and will replace Seesaw.
From Monday, 21st July, teachers will no longer share learning via Seesaw. Instead, all learning updates will be available through Anney. Over time, Anney will become a one-stop shop for parents, hosting all school communications and processes. While we begin with learning, assessment, and some year-level communication in Terms 3 and 4, our long-term goal is to transition away from School Stream as well.
Getting Started with Anney
During the school holidays, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to log in to Anney. Please keep an eye out for this email and follow the steps provided to access the platform.
Download Day – Friday, 27th June
As Term 2 ends on Friday, 27th June, this day will also be Download Day. It’s important that you download all your child’s learning content from Seesaw before access ends. Instructions on how to do this is provided here.
Preparing for Change
We understand that transitioning to a new system can come with challenges. Our team has been preparing for this move for approximately 18 months to ensure a smooth experience. However, we anticipate some initial teething issues as the whole community begins using Anney.
A quote that has guided us through this journey is:
“The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”
Anney will be different from Seesaw, and it may take some time to adjust. But we’re confident that it will greatly enhance our ability to support your child’s learning and strengthen the connection between home and school.

Assessment and Reporting Update
Semester Reports
Semester 1 Reports will be shared with families next Tuesday (Week 9). Reports have been generated in our new Learning Management System ‘Anney’ this semester, but will be posted on Seesaw for families to view. While the template looks a little different, the format of the report remains much the same with an overall teacher-written comment, and assessment of each subject area of the Australian Curriculum indicated on progressive scales.
A couple of changes to note:
- The teacher’s written comment, previously titled “Strengths – Passions – Skills’ is now titled ‘Development of Learner’, focusing specifically on the child’s development of the IB PYP Learner Profile attributes and Approaches to Learning.
- We have also reviewed and updated the progressive scale for ‘Mindset’ which is now titled ‘Engagement in Learning’, something our teachers feel provides a clearer and more accurate indication of each child’s level of engagement in learning for each subject.
3 Way Conferences
In Weeks 2 and 3 of next term (Tues 29th July – Tues 5th August) we will hold 3 way conferences. Parents will receive an invitation on School Stream on Day 1 of Term 3 to sign up for a time slot, either before or after school during this time.

Go For Gold Production Shines!
Year 5’s Original Production Shines
This week, Annesley’s Year 5 students lit up the stage with their debut performance of Go For Gold, an original production that was an outstanding success. Performed three times, twice for the whole school and once for parents and carers, the show captivated audiences with its creativity, humour, and heartfelt message.
Created and performed by our talented Base 5 Performing Arts students, the story followed Suzie Swift, a young athlete faced with a big decision. Should she compete in the 2025 Olympics? To help her decide, Suzie embarks on a magical journey back to 557 BC, the time of the first Olympic Games. Along the way, she meets ancient gods and goddesses, and even legendary figures like Milo, the man who trained for the Olympics by lifting a cow every day.
Blending historical Greek mythology with a modern twist, the performance was full of energy, originality, and flair. The students brought the story to life with great acting, a vibrant set, and imaginative costumes. The show delivered a powerful message: believe in yourself and never give up.
A heartfelt thank you to our Performing Arts teacher Sophie Waller for her outstanding leadership and vision in guiding the students through this creative journey. We extend our thanks to Year 5 teachers Kate Viney and Darren Richardson for their invaluable support and work behind the scenes.
Special thanks to Ruth Harris for her incredible work once again on costume design.
Congratulations to all involved on a truly golden night!
Creativity in Full Bloom
Drama Delights in Semester 1: Creativity in Full Bloom
It has been a wondrous Semester 1 in the Drama strand of Performing Arts, where creativity has flourished and students have communicated their understanding in diverse and imaginative ways.
Our Year 6 students have delved into the world of shadow puppetry, using this theatrical form to craft powerful performances that convey important environmental, health, and social messages. Their ability to blend storytelling with visual artistry has been both thought-provoking and inspiring.
Meanwhile, Year 3 students have been busy devising their own short performances, working both in groups and individually. By integrating dance, music, and drama, they have explored self-expression and collaboration, showcasing their unique voices and growing confidence.
IPSHA Poetry Recital Competition Success!
We are so proud of Emmii and Isabelle who last week represented Annesley at the IPSHA Poetry Recital Competition held this year at Walford School. Both girls delivered a set poem and chosen poem each to a panel of judges and an audience made up of teachers and competitors from other IPSHA schools. The competition is such a wonderful way to experience live performance of poetry and the girls’ confidence, ability and joy at being a part of the event was evident. Congratulations to Emmii for winning 2nd place in the Year 4 competition.
Quest: Year 2 Sleepover
Bravo Annabelle!
On Friday, Annabelle (Year 5) proudly represented Annesley at the SAPSASA Golf event held at Mt Osmond Golf Course, a first for Annesley Junior School!
We are incredibly proud of Annabelle for pursuing her passion and showcasing her skills on the green. Thank you, Annabelle, for representing our school with such enthusiasm and pride. What a fantastic achievement!
Year 3 Camp
Year 3 Camp at Nunyara, Belair
Our Year 3 Camp at Nunyara was a fantastic first overnight adventure in the Quest program. Set in the beautiful Belair hills, the camp was packed with fun, challenge, and discovery.
Students took part in tribal games and team activities that built independence, resilience, collaboration, and problem-solving. Each child achieved something special, whether it was trying something new, working with others, or stepping out of their comfort zone.
A big thank you to our amazing staff for their support and care, helping every student succeed and make lasting memories.
Grandparents and Special Friends
Last week, our ELC students warmly welcomed their Grandparents and Special Friends for a joyful morning of connection and creativity. Together, they explored a variety of hands-on activities, including craft stations, sensory play, and other interactive experiences that celebrated curiosity, learning, and togetherness.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. It was a truly special morning filled with smiles, laughter, and special memories.

Kiss & Drop
Through recent engagement with the Unley Council, they have confirmed guidelines for our community to follow when using the Kiss & Drop zone. Drivers must remain within 3 metres of their car in this zone and can only remain stopped for 2 minutes. If a driver moves further than 3 metres away, the 2-minute period no longer applies. We have had regular inspections from Unley Council of this zone recently. We ask our community members to adhere to these guidelines to avoid getting fined, and to keep our Kiss & Drop zone functioning effectively.
Supervision before and after school
A reminder to Primary families that supervision for our students is provided from 8.30am on school grounds. Prior to this time, students are not to be left onsite without an adult family member. OSHC is available to families needing care after school until 6pm.
